Sugary Drinks and Heart Attack Risks

I've written before about the health issues associated with swigging down lots of sugary drinks. Generally, the problem is an increased risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. But a new heart health study provides another reason to avoid sugary drinks: if you're a man, too many drinks sweetened with sugar could increase the risk of heart attacks.

The study by the Harvard School of Public Health looked at nearly 43,000 male health care professionals. It found that those who drank the most sugary drinks - roughly one a day - were 20 percent more likely to have heart attacks than those who never drank them.

Men who drank artificially sweetened drinks did not have the same risk of a heart attack.

The men in the heart attack study were mostly white and between the ages of 40 and 75 when the study first began in 1986. They were followed for more than 22 years. In that time, the participants accounted for more than 3,500 heart attack cases.
